How buying a firearm here actually works
Chambered is a marketplace, not a dealer. Every firearm sold here moves from a licensed seller to a licensed dealer you choose, and only becomes yours after the same background check you would complete at a gun counter.
Who can buy
- 18 or older to browse, bid on and buy long guns and long-gun ammunition. 21 or older for handguns and handgun ammunition, because federal law bars dealers from transferring handguns to anyone under 21.
- You must be legally eligible to possess the item under federal law and the laws of the state where your receiving dealer is located.
- Every purchase requires the eligibility statements at checkout. False statements in a firearms transaction are a federal crime.
- A denied or delayed NICS check is between you and your dealer. The order is cancelled and refunded less shipping. The seller is not liable.
The transfer, step by step
- Win or buy now. The clock resets to 8 seconds on every bid, so the last bid always gets a fair answer.
- Pick a receiving dealer. Search by ZIP. Dealers list their transfer fee and hours. Not listed? Request them and we verify the license first.
- The seller ships dealer to dealer. Handguns go UPS or FedEx (or USPS licensee to licensee) with adult signature. Long guns ship by any major carrier. Nothing ships to a residence.
- Pickup. Complete ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check with your dealer, pay their transfer fee, observe any state waiting period, and take possession.
- Escrow release. The seller is paid only after your dealer confirms the item arrived as described.
NFA items: suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, AOWs
- Only sellers holding the right SOT class can list NFA items, and only buyers with a receiving SOT dealer can win them.
- The item ships to your SOT dealer on an approved ATF Form 3. You then file Form 4 with your dealer and wait for ATF approval before pickup.
- Not available to buyers in CA, DE, HI, IL, MA, NJ, NY, RI or DC. Machine guns and destructive devices are not sold on Chambered.
Who can sell
- Firearms: verified FFL holders only (Type 01, 02, 07, 08). Private collectors list through a partner dealer who inspects, logs and ships the item.
- Every license is checked against ATF FFL eZ Check at onboarding and monthly. Expired or revoked licenses are suspended automatically.
- Sellers describe condition honestly, disclose modifications, and ship within 2 business days with a copy of their license.
State rules enforced at checkout
City and county ordinances are the buyer's and receiving dealer's responsibility. This table is a summary, not legal advice.
Prohibited listings
- Machine guns, machine gun conversion devices, auto sears, and any part designed to make a firearm fire automatically.
- Unserialized frames or receivers, and firearms with altered or removed serial numbers.
- Destructive devices, explosives, and armor-piercing handgun ammunition.
- Stolen property, items you do not have the right to sell, and anything illegal in either the seller's or the buyer's state.
- Off-platform deals, straw purchases, or any attempt to route a firearm around the dealer transfer.
If something arrives wrong
If the item reaches your dealer materially different from the listing, refuse the transfer. Your dealer notes it, we hold the payout, and the seller pays return shipping. Refunds go back to your original payment method.
